fix(mobile): submit terminal messages through terminal.send, add a newline button - #6527
Conversation
…ctually run The composer wrote `text\r` (or a bracketed-paste frame plus `\r`) straight into the attached stream as one write. A TUI agent reads that burst as a paste, so the Enter landed in the draft as a newline instead of submitting — the message sat in Claude's input box fully typed and never ran. Route submits through the host's `terminal.send` instead, the same path FinishReviewSheet and the desktop use: it writes the Enter as its own delayed write (#6284), frames the text as a bracketed paste only when the running program has that mode on, and serialises against concurrent sends. Quick keys still go over the stream as raw bytes. The composer now clears only once the send resolves, per GlassComposer's onSubmit contract, so a failed send keeps the draft instead of eating it.
📝 WalkthroughWalkthroughTerminal submissions now use asynchronous host terminal delivery. ChangesTerminal submission
Composer controls
Estimated code review effort: 3 (Moderate) | ~20 minutes Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to The mobile composer can still clear edits made during an in-flight send, and quick-key input may interleave with submitted text and Enter. This creates a bounded correctness risk that should be fixed or explicitly accepted before merge. Possibly related PRs

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win
Disable quick keys while terminal.send is in progress.
Line 100 keeps QuickKeysRow enabled while Line 101 only passes isSubmitting to GlassComposer. WorkspaceScreen.handleQuickKey sends raw bytes through TerminalWebView.sendInput, so it bypasses host terminal.send serialization. Since the host sends text and Enter separately, a quick key can arrive between them and alter the submitted terminal action. Pass isSubmitting to QuickKeysRow and disable its buttons until onSubmit settles.

Block unsupported hosts before enabling terminal.send.
v2Host.list and mobile host selection check only host access and online status. They do not enforce host-service version 1.22.0. An older host cannot serve terminal.send, so submission fails at runtime.

expo-ui's SwiftUI TextField exposes nothing for the soft keyboard's return key, so there was no way to put a line break in a draft. Adds a return button to the expanded toolbar that inserts one at the caret (replacing any selection), tracking the caret through the field's onSelectionChange. Shared by both composers, so home prompts get multi-line too.

Expo SDK 56 expo-ui TextFieldRef setSelection onSelectionChange iOS availability
💡 Result:
In Expo SDK 56, the setSelection method on TextFieldRef is available for programmatic control of the text selection range [1][2][3]. However, on iOS and tvOS, the setSelection method requires iOS 18.0+ or tvOS 18.0+ [2][3]. Other TextFieldRef methods, such as focus, blur, clear, and setText, function across all supported versions [2][3]. Regarding onSelectionChange, the TextField component (part of the @expo/ui package) utilizes the selection prop to track the selection range [1][2]. This prop is an observable state object created using useNativeState({ start: number, end: number }) [1][2][4]. The field automatically writes user-driven selection changes back to this state [1][2]. While onSelectionChange was renamed from older event naming conventions (formerly onSelectionChanged) in earlier SDK 56 updates to better match SwiftUI patterns [5], it is available for handling selection updates in the universal TextInput wrapper as well [4][6].

Expo SDK 56 minimum supported iOS version default deployment target
💡 Result:
The minimum supported iOS version for Expo SDK 56 is iOS 16.4 [1][2][3]. When developing with Expo SDK 56, your project's iOS deployment target should be set to 16.4 or higher [1][4]. If you are managing your own native code or Expo modules, you should ensure that your podspec files are updated to reflect this minimum version [1][4]: s.platforms = {:ios => '16.4' } Additionally, Expo SDK 56 requires the use of Xcode 26.4 or higher to compile native iOS projects [1][2][3]. You can explicitly manage your iOS deployment target using the ios.deploymentTarget property in your app configuration [5].

Support iOS 16.4–17 or add a caret fallback.
Expo SDK 56 supports iOS 16.4, but TextFieldRef.setSelection requires iOS 18. On iOS 16.4–17, newline and dictation insertion will not restore the caret. Raise the deployment target to iOS 18 only if older iOS versions are out of scope; otherwise guard this call and provide a fallback.

TextFieldRef.setSelection so iOS 16.4–17 remains supported: guard the iOS

…ttons
Verified on device: the field never reports where its cursor is. Both
onSelectionChange and a `selection` ObservableState read back {0,0} once
you've typed, so inserting "at the caret" put every line break at position 0.
Writing the caret does work, so append and then place it after the insert.
Also labels +, the newline button and send for VoiceOver. The send button and
the terminal's quick-key up arrow were both a bare `arrow.up` symbol, so they
were indistinguishable to assistive tech (and to a UI test).
The header hand-rolled `text-[15px] uppercase tracking-wider`, none of which is in the design system — and at 15px it was the same size as the workspace row title, leaving the caps to carry the whole parent/child signal. Use the `large` text variant so the hierarchy comes off the type scale instead.

Went through the CodeRabbit findings. Dispositions: 1. Disable quick keys while 2. Gate on host-service ≥ 1.22.0 — skipping. There's no host-version gating mechanism in the mobile app to reuse (CodeRabbit's own search found none), so this means inventing one, which is well outside this fix. The dependency is documented in the PR description instead. Hosts ship with desktop and auto-update; 1.22.0 is the current version. 3. Guard |

Problem
Sending a message to an agent from the mobile terminal composer didn't submit it. The text arrived in Claude's input box fully typed, with a newline appended, and just sat there.
WorkspaceScreen.handleSubmitwrote the message and its Enter into the attached stream as a single write:TUI agents treat bytes that arrive together as one paste burst, so the trailing
\rwas absorbed into the draft as a newline rather than read as a keypress. Host-service already fixed this class for follow-up sends in #6284. Thetext.includes("\n")heuristic was wrong in both directions too — it can't know whether the running program actually has bracketed-paste mode on.Fix
Submits go through the host's
terminal.send— the path FinishReviewSheet, the CLI and the SDK already use. The host writes the Enter as its own delayed write, frames the text as a bracketed paste only when the session's mode tracker says the program has that mode on, and serialises concurrent sends. Quick keys still go over the stream as raw bytes; they're control bytes, not submissions. The composer now clears only once the send resolves, per
GlassComposer'sonSubmitcontract — a failed send keeps the draft and alerts instead of eating it.Newline button
expo-ui's SwiftUI
TextFieldexposes nothing for the soft keyboard's return key, so there was no way to get a line break into a draft at all. Adds areturnbutton to the expanded toolbar next to+, in the sharedGlassComposer, so the home composer gets multi-line prompts too.It appends rather than inserting at the caret, which is deliberate: the field never reports where its cursor is. Both
onSelectionChangeand aselectionObservableStateread back{0,0}once you've typed (confirmed on device — the first cut put every line break at position 0). Writing the caret does work, so it appends and then places the caret after the insert. Also labels
+, the newline button and send for VoiceOver. Send and the terminal's quick-key up arrow were both a barearrow.upsymbol — indistinguishable to assistive tech, and to a UI test. Also: home project headers
Separate commit, unrelated to the above but shipping in the same build. The headers were
text-[15px] uppercase tracking-wider— none of which is in the design system, and at 15px identical in size to the workspace row title, so the caps carried the entire parent/child signal. Now thelargetext variant, so hierarchy comes off the type scale.Verification
In the app, on the simulator, against a real Claude Code session: composed a two-line message using the ↵ button, tapped send → submitted as one prompt, agent answered
4, composer cleared. Screenshots of the two-line draft and the cleared state were reviewed.Against the host directly, via
superset terminals send(sameterminal.sendprocedure):What is 7 times 6? Reply with only the number.⏺ 42, input box empty⏺ 4bun run lintclean;tsc --noEmitclean forapps/mobile(remaining errors are pre-existing, in port-scanner/pty-daemon/workspace-fs). Host behaviour also has an existing regression test —terminal.send-snapshot.node-test.ts, "submit Enter is a separate write, delayed past the paste burst".Note
Depends on the host running host-service ≥ 1.22.0 (where #6284 landed, 2026-08-09). Older hosts bundle the Enter server-side and will still swallow it.
